A Look Back at Previous Celebrations:
Our inaugural event, Kaitlyn's 1st Birthday Dance for SIDS, was held on November 28, 2009 at Sykesville Freedom District Fire Hall. It was a great success. There were about 200 attendees, and we raised $8,500. Proceeds primarily benefited SIDS Educational Services and the University of Maryland Center for Infant & Child Loss. We also made gifts to Gamber Fire Company, Carroll Hospital Center, and Sinai Hospital Child Life Center in appreciation for all they did for Kaitlyn.
Kaitlyn's younger brother, Blake, was born just a couple weeks before her 2nd birthday. We weren't able to organize a large fundraising event, so we celebrated her birthday by visiting her niche and releasing balloons.
After a one year hiatus from a big fundraising event, we celebrated Kaitlyn's 3rd Birthday with a Bull & Oyster Roast for SIDS, on her birthday - December 3, 2011 at Circle D Farm's Meadowview Banquet Room. We sold 192 tickets, and we raised $6,250. Proceeds primarily benefited SIDS Educational Services and the University of Maryland Center for Infant & Child Loss. We also made a gift to Sinai Hospital Child Life Center in appreciation for all they did for Kaitlyn.
In 2012, about 180 of us revisited Circle D Farm for Kaitlyn's Dinner/Dance for SIDS. We raised a record $10,000 for SIDS Educational Services, the Center for Infant & Child Loss, and a small gift to Sinai Hospital Child Life Center. We could not have done it without an incredibly generous gesture by CICL Advisory Board Member Jonathan Melnick. Jonathan surprised us all with a live auction of a week's stay at his vacation home in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. And he took the generosity a step further by awarding not just one, but three packages to Buzz, Gary, and Tim! Thanks so much to the four of them and all of the other guests for their generosity! We introduced our first ever "Making a Difference" Award in 2012, giving it to Columbia Ski Club for their annual support of Kaitlyn's Dance. The night concluded with one last tribute to Kaitlyn. We released four sky lanterns... a beautiful finish for a beautiful evening.
Kaitlyn's 5th Birthday Dance was bigger and better than ever! It was our first ever sell out with 250 tickets sold - blowing away our previous record of 190. We were excited to return to the site of Kaitlyn's 1st Birthday Dance for SIDS - Sykesville Fire Hall. But this time we were in the brand new, beautiful Legacy Hall. It was a great venue, with plenty of room for dancing! We needed it since DJ Paul Lantz had the crowd up and moving as usual. Kudos to our new caterer, Salazar Catering, for "fueling everybody up" for all that dancing. Dinner was delicious, and the oysters were a hit as always. The winners of our 2nd Annual "Making a Difference" Award were Christina & Gary Hataway. Thanks to Christina & Gary, everybody who attended the dance this year, all the people and businesses who made generous donations, and everybody who was with us in spirit. We raised $8,500!
Not much changed from 2013 to 2014. By popular demand, we returned to the Legacy Hall at Sykesville Freedom District Fire Company. Salazar Catering was back with just one menu change - the new pork shanks were a hit. And of course DJ Paul Lantz was back and as great as ever. The 3rd Annual "Making a Difference" Award was presented to Jerry Poley and Pam Plantz-Poley for being long time supporters of the dance and for going above and beyond collecting donations for this year. Coldwell Banker made very generous donations of $3,000 to both of our charities, leading the way to $15,000 raised!
We started the "Making a Difference" Award in 2012 to honor a person or people who have gone above and beyond supporting Kaitlyn's Dance.
